Module 1 – Techniques Training and Practice

Orientation –We believe in the intricate body-mind connection. The techniques in this module will be taught and practiced with this wider orientation of gross and subtle body connection. The asanas, pranayamas, bandhas and mudras will be taught with a focus not just on the muscles but also on the subtler energies and emotions.

Asana

  • What is Asana? Why to practice Asana?
  • Asana in Classical Hatha Yoga (ref. Hatha Pradipika and Gheranda Samhita)
  • Asana according to Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra
  • Asana in modern Yoga
  • Theory and practice of 40 specific asanas
  • Standing, sitting, supine, prone, twists, inversions, balance, strength asanas and variations wherever applicable
  • Structure, function, technique, alignment, benefits and contraindications of each Asana
  • Understanding importance of symmetry and alignment
  • Joint mobilisation exercises and warm up exercises
  • Surya Namaskar – active and soft exercise and its physical, physiological and spiritual basis
  • Structure, function, technique and procedure of Surya Namaskar
  • Hands-on training on topics like, how to demonstrate asanas, verbal cues, precise instructions, arranging the class, pre-planning the class, maintaining the decorum of the class, observation and adjustment of asanas.

Pranayama

  • What is Pranayama? Why to practice Pranayama?
  • Pranayama in Classical Hatha Yoga (ref. Hatha Pradipika and Gheranda Samhita)
  • Pranayama in Patanjali’s Yoga Darshana
  • Pranayama leading to Pratyahara, the art of stillness.

Kriyas

Bandhas and Mudras

Mantras

  • Science of sound in Tantra, Mantra and Bhakti
  • Chanting of 4 Shanti Mantras and few other mantras with psycho-spiritual benefits

Module 2 – Teaching Methodology

Orientation – To become a competent teacher, you have to be a sincere student and that’s why in this module, we will assess both the aspects of being the student and teacher / leader.

  • Being a student – attitude, qualities and practices of student. From confusion to clarity, the life cycle of a student.
  • Being a teacher – attitude, qualities and practices of a teacher.
  • Types of Teachers according to Yoga scriptures, Types of Students according to Yoga scriptures.
  • The “student-teacher” relationship; Gurushishya parampara.
  • Who is a Guru, who is a teacher?
  • Teaching skill set – Preparing and planning a class, proper observing, sensing, demonstration, correcting the postures, understanding student’s strength and weakness, patience, unattached involvement in students’ learning process, teaching with heart and with clarity of mind.
  • Instructional skill set – voice modulation, proper use of language, speaking with belief, being precise and crisp, decorum of class, regulations and instructions pre and post asana class, value of sincerity, simplicity humility as a student and as a teacher.

Business Aspect of Yoga

  • The Yoga Industry, current statistics and analysis, practicalities of making Yoga a business.
  • Style of Yoga. Which style are you?
  • Clarity of intent and action in business
  • Attitude and acceptance of money and role of philanthropy as a Yoga teacher.
  • Value of a mission statement.
  • Entry and exit strategy of your Yoga business, where to reach – studio, workshops, retreats, corporate, neighbourhood, sports, wellness, hotels, clubs ….
  • Business plan, how and why.
  • Marketing yourself, your business, branding strategies.

Module 3 – Anatomy and Physiology

Orientation – There is a very close link between body and mind. Any work on physical body has its effects on the subtle body. That’s why the focus of this module is to understand the body-mind complex and its functioning in a holistic way. This module works very closely with the Technique and Training module and will be referred to always in the practice.

  • Theory of Panchakosha – The integrated approach.
  • Medical anatomy – Male and Female body, differences – Skeleton, Bones, Joints, Muscles (ligaments, tendons, soft tissues), Organs, Blood, Lipids.
  • Body systems – we will cover some important bosy systems like skeletal, muscular, endocrine, digestive and cardiovascular.
  • Yogic Anatomy
    Nadis, network and the main nadis
    10 Pranas
    7 Chakras
    Merudanda – heating and cooling aspects of spine
    Kundalini
    Rise of Kundalini
  • Concept of Indriyas (the instruments of cognizance and activity)
  • Concept of energetic blocks and how Asana and Pranayama affect the physical body and energetic body.
  • Principles of Exercise Sciences and variables of Physical Fitness – strength, endurance, flexibility and body composition.
  • Ergonomics – mobility patterns on joints, range of motion study, hyper and hypo extension, rotation and pressure.
  • Asana and Therapy – Healing some common ailments through Yoga therapy
  • Mind Module
  • Concept of mind in Western terms
  • Concept of Chitta / Concept of antahkarana (the inner apparatus)
  • Mind and past life theory
  • Chitta and its relation to Prana
  • Working on the Chitta
  • Yoga Nidra – Theory and practice

 

Module 4 – Yoga Philosophy, Lifestyle and Ethics

Orientation – This module forms the theoretical basis of the whole course. We believe that yoga is not just a theoretical philosophy but also a science of Self transformation. Learning the philosophy and methods of yoga will not only help individual transformation but also give us the much needed strength to transform others.

Yoga Philosophy

  • History of Yoga (Indian spiritual thought)
  • Vaidic, pre-classical, classical, post classical, modern Yoga
  • What is yoga? And what is not Yoga?
  • Brief introduction to sister science of Ayurveda – introduction and basics
  • Gods and Divine beings, their representation and symbolism.
  • Study of six systems of Indian philosophy in brief
  • Study of the different types of Yoga
    Karma Yoga – philosophy, role of karma and free will.
    Bhakti Yoga – philosophy of Love and devotion
    Jnana Yoga – philosophy of wisdom
    Hatha Yoga – History and lineage
    Ashtanga Yoga, of Patanjali and Pattabhi jois, comparison and contrast.
  • Scriptures
    Why study the scriptures?
    Proper way of reading and studying the scriptures.
    Study of Bhagavad Gita
    Study of Yoga Darshana (Raja Yoga)

Yoga and Ethics

  • Study of compilation of ethical guidelines for Yoga teachers
  • Guiding and aiding a student v/s creating co-dependency, Maintaining confidentiality of information
  • Inter professional relationships
  • Social ethics and personal ethics (yama and niyama)
  • Cultural sensitivity and ethics
  • Ethics and professionalism, where to draw the line

Yoga Lifestyle

  • Yoga off the mat

  • Living the sutras and verses (talk on selected verses from yoga sutra and Bhagvad Gita and how to put them in practice)

Self-Transformation Module

This is a module in which the participants will themselves go through a conscious journey of transformations on the following variables (this is apart from the transformation that may happen during the learning of the requisite modules as prescribed by Yoga Alliance)

  • Self-Acceptance
  • Love and Acceptance of Body
  • Reflection on past and facing fears
  • Conscious work with forgiveness
  • Re-evaluating Self-esteem
  • Generating Self-Love
  • Generating clarity in own intent and surrendering to the higher wisdom of Life in general.

Sanskrit

  • Basic introduction to letters and pronunciations
  • Writing your own name in Sanskrit
  • Guide to correction Pronunciation of asana names and some common Yogic terms and numbers.

 

Module 5 – Practicum

Goal – The goal is to make the students proficient at not just teaching but also being better students and assistants. Competence will be ascertained on basis of confidence in leading a class, adjustments and specifics in instructions. All the knowledge gained in the course is strengthened by the practice of this module.
In this module, each student will get a chance to:
a). Lead (teach) b). Assist c). Participate as a student

Note –
The course is a challenging course. Time and study wise it IS demanding so please be prepared to put in long hours of study, reflection and movement. Since it is also a Self Development intensive, there will be some energetic “self changes” that you would be going through, so please take a note of that as well.

A yogi looks at life experiences as wisdom in disguise and in this sense everything that we will go through in this course will contribute towards self wisdom. We all have our background and conditionings and we will certainly bring them along to the course knowingly or unknowingly. All effort is being put in to make this journey as fruitful and comfortable as possible but still a sincere request would be to look beyond the obvious discomfort if any and adapt, adjust and accommodate to the situation.
