Equal Vision & Vedantic Teachings – A thought

As a bomb brings down a sky scraper, as a landmine maims a child, as a youth explodes himself for his “religion” and as millions die of starvation every year I am affirmed that some thing went wrong some where in our evolution as a society. The distribution of population on basis of religion, color, geography and monitory capability has reached its helm.

As we struggle through the vagaries of modern age I can’t help but wonder where the humanity went wrong.

Knichi Ohme in his Management best seller “The borderless world” postulates an idea of how the business organizations around the world can develop their competencies and capabilities and profit from “interlinked economy”, and create something called as “win-win solution”. Such a beautiful idea isn’t it? What if this same idea is taken beyond the border of business?

And as the song “love makes the world go round” flows through my mind I cant help but think about what Vedanta teaches us about the “one” ness of “every” one.

Vedanta preaches “equal vision”. In fact the principle of Samya or equality is the basis of Advaita Vedanta (non-dualism). Jagatguru Shankaracharya -the father of Advaita Vedanta Philosophy advocates Samyayoga- Doctrin of equality of all. In his “Bhajagovindam” he exhorts “He, You and I are but the one all inclusive Reality conditioned by different adjuncts; hence man should cast off all differentiation and hatred. He should not be impatient with anyone and should maintain equanimity and should try to see the Self in all. In his “Dasasloki” he says that to me there are no casts, no societal restrictions and obligations, for all super impositions if I and Me have disappeared and I remain always as Supreme Reality.

Everything we see is but made of matter in form of chemicals. We are oblivious to the Reality behind this bunch of chemicals which we see as a European or African or beautiful or short. Imagine if we were given glasses that could make us see living forms in their chemical components we would see all the living beings springing out of basic carbon atoms. Only when we get the wisdom of stepping back and looking through the sight of equal vision do we realize how beautiful and similar we all are and how we all share the same Radiance and Divinity.

In Bhagvat Gita Sri Krishna says that a wise man would be acting for what he calls as “lokasangraha” or to hold the world and society together. The epic also states in Chapter 5 Verse 18 that a man of wisdom (pandita) would see equally in everyone the same Brahman Reality (Self).

This man of wisdom knows that this dualistic universe is but a delusion from the stand point of absolute Truth as mentioned in “vivekachudamani” the book that professes to be the “crown jewel of Discrimination between the unreal and real”.

Equanimity is also mentioned as a method of clearing the consciousness. The classic Hatha Yoga text “ Hathapradipika” by Swami Swatmarama says in Chapter 4 Verse 55 says that merging the individual self in cosmic self and vice versa and seeing the Self everywhere and in everyone, one should not let anything enter ones consciousness.

Through out history kings, rulers, tyrants and now the politicians have tried to divide the society on basis of religion, caste, language and the saints and seers have tried to get us closer. This battle is on since many centuries. Which side the society values most will determine which kind of social structure it adopts.

Ignorance is the root cause of human suffering and when this ignorance is annihilated by the power of equal vision humanity will surely see the rising sun of happiness and peace. Lets pray to God to give us the power of Equal Vision and let us all evolve together.

There’s hunger everywhere
We’ve got to take a stand
Reach out for someone’s hand
Love makes the world go round
