Asana of the fortnight : Trikonasana

Trikonasana
One of the basic postures in Yoga , Trikon means a triangle. Trikonasana gets it name by the triangular shape the body forms.
Step-by-step
Stand with a 2 feet wide stance and focus on your breath.
Turn the toes of the right foot towards the right and inhale.
Raise the arms so that they are parallel to the floor.
Look at the right hand and start bending towards your right laterally sliding your right hand over your right leg
When you feel your body is not moving any further lower, hold the posture and turn your head so that you look at your left hand.
Retain the posture for one minute.
Slowly come back to the upright position.
Repeat the same on the left side.
Bring the legs together and come out of the posture.
Benefits
Helps increase the lateral flexibility of the spine.
Develops the muscles along the spine, strengthening the abdominal and waist region and neck, thus removing backaches and neck pain.
Aiding in the remedy of ailments of the lungs by opening up the ribcage area.
Stimulating the abdominal organs, thereby helping to relieve constipation and indigestion, restoring the digestive fire – ‘jatharagni’ and stimulating the appetite by increasing the metabolic rate.

Wandering in the Himalayas

There was a time in my life when devotion was flowing through me like a river in spate. Mind had limited application during those times, tears didn’t stop rolling down the cheeks. I had to be close to Lord Shiva in the Himalayas only to come closer to the Shiva within me. Devotion or Bhakti has always been for me a test of my surrender to the higher designs of the Universe. It was time to put this surrender to test.

In Rishikesh
In December of 2006 I traveled across the foot hills of Himalayas. Promptly surrendering my money wallet and mobile phone to a friend I walked to explore the inner through the outer. Dropping all, I walked with a mind of a ‘Parivrajaka’ (wandering spiritual seeker).

A dear friend from London offered to host a series of seminars in London. During my initial days in London another common friend who was working as a mentor for Narcotics Anonymous helped us organize an evening event/seminar for the recovering drug addicts and other people.

Helping Recovering Drug Addicts in London
The event was a fantastic success and the life positive philosophy of Yoga was happily accepted by the participants. Participants expressed, shared, danced and gave love. Since then there was no looking back, the participants who were individually going through difficult stages in their lives were hungry for more. As one of them said for the first time in their life they had seen a ray of positive hope in their life, some concept that could help them manage their lives with complete confidence.

Empowerment Through Yoga for Street Children

The primary aim of classical yoga was always to aid the evolution of humans. A diligent practice of Yoga can bring about a gradual but certain change in a persons life. Over thousands of years people have been using Yogic tools and helping themselves become stronger to face the trials of life. Over my teaching career I have seen hundreds of people giving me feedback about how they have managed to change for good by following the yoga lifestyle.

Working with Street Kids
I started working with the boys at Saathi in October 2006. Saathi is a registered development agency in India working primarily with youth living on the streets and runaway adolescent girls and the various issues that are a part of their struggles.

“The Israeli Yoga Teachers’ Association had the great pleasure of hosting Prasad Rangnekar for a series of workshops in our country. We were privileged to meet and study with an intelligent and very inspiring teacher.
Prasad succeeds in bringing the traditional teachings of yoga together with a here-and-now approach that makes each lesson deep, relevant, and again, an inspiring reminder as to why we are practicing this yoga!
During his stay in our country, I can truly say that Prasad touched the hearts and minds of all who met him.”

“Prasad has a rare combination of strength, flexibility, grace and wisdom that brings a whole new level of possibility to yoga. He delivers his programs with wit, humor, intelligence and passion.
While some people are excellent at doing yoga and others are excellent at teaching it. Prasad has the ability to do both. He becomes a living bridge for others to master themselves both inside and out.”
